Description

Photograph of Unionist mural painted in 2002 to commemorate the sacrifice of the 36th Ulster Division at the Battle of Somme during WWI. The mural is set on a distinctly orange background, setting the tone for association with the Protestant Unionist/Loyalist groups. The UVF and YCV are memorialized on the mural. Above the mural is the Crown & the Bible with the phrase "One Faith, One Crown." On the left side of the mural is the popular UVF slogan "For God and Ulster." The right side of the mural displays the English flag, the Harp symbol of the Isle of Ireland, and the Red Hand of Ulster. There are also several shamrocks displayed around the Red Hand of Ulster. Each of these symbols connect modern UVF participants to their heritage.

This mural is an excellent example of Unionist attempts to bridge the modern day UVF to the honour and sacrifice of the earlier UVF group.
